A man who fled to Texas after Hurricane Harvey devastated his home has described how he left the house with a broken window and his house is still “a mess.”
John Fikete is the owner of a small business in Houston’s downtown area and has lived in his home since the storm.
He said he got out of the car and saw people in the street and his wife was on her way home from work when he heard about the flooding in the area.
“When I came out of my house, the only thing I saw was a massive storm drain that was coming down on top of the house, a huge storm drain,” Fiketes wife said on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Fikete said he called his local authorities and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, but no one was able to help him.
He eventually contacted the Federal Weather Service, which then sent a team to the home.
Fikete said his family was able, at first, to escape the damage.
But he said the water was still coming in and that his entire house was a mess.
“The house is completely submerged in water, everything was totally flooded,” Fisikete told ABC.
“It’s really, really bad, I mean, the whole house is just soaked to the bone.
It’s just so bad, and the whole family is out in the field, they don’t know what to do.
The whole family has just been swept away.”
Fitch reported from Washington.
