A roof coatings can make a camper’s roof look cleaner, even though the product is made from materials that may be toxic.
According to the National Resources Defense Council, which works with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, a roof coating with an asbestos-like coating could potentially cause skin and respiratory problems.
The NRDC also notes that there’s no scientific proof that the material actually helps protect against the harmful chemicals that are commonly found in roofing materials.
In other words, the coating could end up being just as bad for the skin as it is for the roof itself.
For example, the material is said to “fool” people into thinking they are protecting themselves from asbestos when it actually is actually causing them harm.
In a report published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health, a group of scientists said that there was no evidence to suggest that a roofing coating will actually stop asbestos exposure.
